During the 15th century, England was torn apart by a series of dynastic conflicts known as the Wars of the Roses. These wars were fought between two rival branches of the royal House of Plantagenet: the House of York, symbolised by a white rose, and the House of Lancaster represented by a red rose.
What began as a dispute over the rightful claim to the English throne escalated into decades of unrest, betrayal, and shifting alliances. Battles were fought across the country, kings were deposed, and families divided — leaving England politically unstable and deeply scarred.
The white rose of York came to symbolise purity and legitimacy, while the red rose of Lancaster represented strength and sacrifice. Yet for years, neither side could secure lasting peace.
The Birth of the Tudor Rose
Peace finally came in 1485 when Henry VII defeated Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth. Henry, a Lancastrian claimant, took a decisive step to heal a fractured nation by marrying Elizabeth of York, uniting the two rival houses.
From this union emerged the Tudor Rose — a single flower combining five inner white petals of York with five outer red petals of Lancaster. More than a decorative emblem, it was a deliberate political statement: England was whole again.
